Oat milk for about eighty cents a litre, made while you're in the shower.

Load oats or nuts and water, press one button, and thirty minutes later there's a litre of hot plant milk with three ingredients in it instead of fourteen. Set the 12-hour timer the night before and it's waiting when you come downstairs.

The carton in your fridge has gellan gum, dipotassium phosphate and sunflower lecithin in it because it has to survive a warehouse. Yours doesn't.

The honest notes

• Homemade plant milk separates. No emulsifiers means you shake it before every pour. This is normal and not a fault.
• It keeps 3–4 days, not three weeks. Make what you'll drink.
• Run the self-clean immediately. Nut residue that dries onto the filter screen is genuinely unpleasant to remove later.
• Do not fill past the max line. It will overflow, and the silicone seal only does so much.
